Hungary - The wind of change

There is hope for Hungary after all, the possibility for a change after sixteen years. The elections concluded, ballots counted, the long-ruling party lost, the two years of effort by Peter Magyar cumulated in an absolute landslide victory with a chance of rethinking and starting anew. The old billboards are torn down, no more propaganda, the country is waking up, hopefully towards a better future.

Hopeful myself that it will be a change for good, that the sentiments will progress into such work which could reform the country for the better.

Living in the UK since over seven and a half years can't say much, took my part by travelling to Manchester on election day, and miss the feel of those protests of the past, but the general overwhelming oppression, the feel of them entirely owning us was too much. Hopefully such protests won't become necessary in the near future, may the country progress towards constructive rebuilding and reintegration with Europe.

We are European - from nine years ago

There will be a lot to do there. Rural parts of the country are in ruin and poverty unimaginable in Europe, healthcare is in ruin, education is in ruin. The legal system including the Constitution is a patchwork of sixteen years of keeping changing it to the governing party's whims, sometimes overnight. The remnants of Orban's party need to be cleaned up for good (one of the few constituencies they managed to still win was for example by them finding someone called "Peter Magyar" and running him as independent to confuse voters, successfully), without falling into following those footprints turning into another oppressive party down the road.

For now, hopeful. And Scorpions' song is still timeless and relevant ...
